Policy For The Use of The Mailing List "members@euroclub.mit.edu"

The purpose of the mailing list members@euroclub.mit.edu is the exchange of information between Europeans at MIT in general and the members of the European Club in particular. It is a moderated mailing list, which means that every message sent to members@euroclub.mit.edu will be screened by the European Club Committee, and inappropriate postings will not be forwarded to the entire mailing list.

The following policy is used to determine whether or not a posting is appropriate:

The general guideline is that a posting should be related to Europe or European culture, or be of specific interest to the community of Europeans working at MIT or living in the Boston area.

According to that guideline, we consider the following topics appropriate for posting:

  • Activities organized and announced by the European Club.
  • Activities organized by a Club member for which he/she seeks other participants, such as sports teams, bicycle tours, etc. Parties are also fine if many Europeans are expected to attend.
  • Announcements of events featuring European culture, such as films, concerts, or museum exhibits.

Important: When sending a message to this mailing list, you should specify "Please post" either in the subject line or at the beginning of your message. Your message might not be sent to the list if you omit this.

Postings should be in English. Even if your message is of interest only to speakers of one particular language, include at least one line in English with a summary and an explanation why the rest of the message is not in English.

Messages with the following topics should not be posted:

  • Moving sales, housing offers. All sales and housing ads are now being processed through the Bulletin Board. Messages will expire and be removed automatically in 3 weeks. Please do not post more then one message regarding the same subject. We are sorry, but we do not allow commercial postings to our boards.
  • Parties and other events, both on- and off-campus, that are neither related to Europe nor have a particular appeal to Europeans.
  • Moving sales and housing offers if they come from a person who is in no way related to the community of Europeans in Boston. There are more appropriate forums for such postings, such as the newsgroups athena.housing, ne.housing, athena.forsale, ne.forsale.
  • Commercial offers. While we understand that there are many commercial offers which are of particular interest to Europeans, we request that all such offers should first be sent to the European Club Committee <contact@euroclub.mit.edu>. We will post them on the "members@euroclub.mit.edu" mailing list if we deem that appropriate.
  • Jokes, news. Many jokes are circulating the internet, as are virus warnings and other news stories. Many of these have been around for a long time and circulate over and over again, becoming annoying to veteran internet users. Also, some have no truth in them whatsoever, but rather are modern "urban legends", such as the "Good Times Virus" story. They should therefore not be forwarded to this mailing list.
  • Opinions and discussions. Postings expressing the author's personal opinion, whether political or otherwise, are not appropriate, nor are discussions, i.e. replies to a posting by somebody else. Note that there is a mailing list at MIT for the discussion of European politics, namely "politics@euroclub.mit.edu". (Click here for instructions how to join that mailing list.)
  • Requests to be added to or removed from the mailing list. For instructions how to accomplish these tasks, see our web-page on e-mail lists.
